Linden Hill Garden Center
A bustling landscape design-build firm specializing in historic and native landscapes recruited us to transform a circa 1800 stone bank barn into their retail center for the nursery and landscaping side of the business. We utilized the large volume and strong textures of the exposed stone and timber to create a compelling backdrop for plants, garden and home accessories and gifts. New elements like an office loft, fire stairs and bathrooms were carefully inserted into the barn without detracting from the simple, yet powerful structure. Existing window and door openings were thoughtfully used to harvest natural daylight and gain views to enticing display gardens. We used the stable level of the barn and the south facing barnyard to create a strong connection of retail space to the nursery gardens and stock yards. By retaining the historic character of the barn and its setting, we recycled a significantly contributing building on a historic farmstead in a way that sensitively adapts it to its new use, has become a destination point, and contributes to the local economy.
